TheHutchings foundthisproperty
quitebyaccident— theyspotted theoriginal cottage
from thewater, which hada for sale sign haphazardly hangingon thebalcony. The couple
wasquick to recognize thepotential,andpromptlypurchased theproperty.Because thebay-
side residencewouldeventuallybecome their retirementhome, theydecided to teardown the
existing structureandbuild to suit.
BaylynConstructionspecializes inbuildinghomesdesigned tomatchclientsneedsand lifestyle.
Duringhis first meetingwith thehomeowners, David knew the couplewas leaning towarda
Normericahomewithauthentic timber framingandenergy-efficientpostandbeamconstruction
techniques. The adventure that followed involved months of design work with input from
Normerica,BaylynandRedmanWatson InteriorDesign.Mikecreditshiswifewith takingcare
of theessential details of the living spaces,whilehewas relegated toCaptainof the (consid-
erable)garage structure.
The floorplan, tailored to21st-century living, boasts largecommunal spacesandanabsence
of main floor hallways. The homewas designed somewhat akin tobungalow livingwith an
open floor plan concept where everything the couple needs is incorporatedwithin themain
floor level — laundry,master suite, kitchenanddining.
Witha spectacular180 footwater frontage, theprimaryobjectivewas tomaximize theview
fromevery room throughout theentirehome. To thisend, they settledonPellaArchitect Series
windowswithaluminumcladexteriorandclearpine interior.
Mikeand hiswifeareperhapsmost delightedwith thegreat room, a vast, comfortableand
invitingenclosurewith ‘knockyour socksoff’ panoramicviews. It’s thego-toplace inwhich to
curl upand readononeof theoversized sofasor simplywatch theweatherpatterns formand
pass overGeorgianBay. ARumford, highefficiency fireplaceanchors the room, flankedby
wrought ironaccentsbyDesiron inClarksburg, includingcustom fireplaceutensils,andcoffee
table.Vaultedpineceilingsadd to themagnificenceof thespacewhile lending to thecoziness
— certainly this is the focal gathering spot within the home.MBMStoneworks undertook the
sizeablestonemasonryprojectof thegrand fireplace,adding textureand interest to thesoaring
spaceandvisually linking it to theshorelinebeyond. The finishesareequally refined, freshand
natural: earth tonedwalls, additional wrought irondetails andpost andbeam timberswhich
aremostlypinewith theexceptionof large, loadbearingDouglas Firbeams.
