Q:
If you have not yet been named to the Canadian Olympic
Team what will you need to do in order to qualify?
A:
It gets pretty confusing. Let’s see if I can help you out. Snowboarding
only gets about 24 or 26 spots for all disciplines. (HalfPipe, Slopestyle,
BoarderCross, Alpine) From those spots each discipline gets a maximum
of four spots per gender. That’s not all. First you need to open a spot
for your country. To do that, you need to be in the top 40 on the FIS list
and have a minimum of a 100 FIS points. Once you open a spot for the
country it doesn’t mean you get to go. Now you have to compete for
those spots. Those of us in Halfpipe will have about four contests that
will count towards making the Canadian Olympic team. (New Zealand,
Finland, Colorado, Quebec). Not only do we have to compete against
other riders in Halfpipe—it turns out that you have to get better results
then the other sports (Slopestyle, BoarderCross, Alpine) to earn your
spot on the team.
Q:
How has riding on the Escarpment helped you hone your
skills for the world stage?
A:
Snowboarding on the Escarpment helped get me where I am today.
If it wasn’t for my family, friends, well maintained Halfpipe and park at
Craigleith while I was growing up I wouldn’t be doing what I’m doing
now.
Q:
Where do you train?
A:
Since there’s only a total of 3 Olympic size Halfpipes in Canada, I’ve
had to travel all over the place just to ride…Our team is constantly traveling
to places like the States, NewZealand and even Europe to ride goodHalf-
pipes. It’s really too bad no one has stepped up inOntario and grownwith
the sport. It’s kind of like the saying, “If you build it they will come.” These
other countries are still keeping upwith the times and people travel around
the world just to ride good Halfpipes and Parks.
