A safe environment is important. Feeders should be
placedclose to shrubberyor treesbut as faraspossible
fromwindowsandshouldbecleanedandscrubbedreg-
ularly. The chafeon theground shouldbe removed. A
clean feeder will be less likely topass on infections to
birds.

Redpolls are small birds, slightly larger than the American Goldfinch. They are
members of the finch family. To survive extreme cold, they knock seeds to the
ground, swoop down to pick them up, quickly storing the seeds in their
throat sac, and then escape to a more sheltered, warmer and safer spot.
