ESCARPMENT MAGAZINE | Fall 2014 - page 14

Therewasa time
when thesemonthswere referred toas ‘The
ShoulderSeason’, that period in thecalendarwhenvery littlewasgoing
on, allwasquiet andvisitors to the regionwere rare. Not anymore.
OurdearoldpalAutumnhasbecomequiteacelebrityaround theseparts.
Afterall, to reallybea showoff, and that’swhatAutumn is, vast expanses
of hillsidesareneededalongwithgoldenafternoonsandcrisp, frosted
evenings.Add to themix, acriss-crossof twistygravel roads, bursting
appleorchardsand farm fields ripewith theharvest—well now, what
couldbemoreperfect?
Autumn settles indeliciouslyonour Escarpment, with its riot of colourand
richly scentedair.Activityandpeopleareeverywhere. There’snothing
quiet about it.
Until thatmorningwhen it’sgoneandyoungWinter hasarrived. This isa
gamechanger—subtle, but explodingwithanticipation.Weknowwhat’s
coming. Firewood is stacked. Shovels standat attention. Skisandboards
are sharp—they’rewaxedandanxious toget going.We’re ready.
The folksat theFarmers' Almanachavewarnedus toexpect “shiveryand
shovelry”.Well, thepolar vortexand relentless snowstormsof lastWinter
might have slowedusdownbut theydidn’t stopus. We’rehardy stock.
If
fickleWinteropts to sendusan
ElNiño,we’ll dealwith that too.Warmer
wouldbenice, just as longas itspartneredwith snow. Please.
Clearly, the seasonsplayahuge role inourpart of theglobeandweather
patternsare important.Wehaveplansand recreation isadailyoccurrence.
It’sabigpart ofwhywe livehereandwhyvisitors flock to join in the fun.
Alongwith that, our townsandvillagesofferworldclassdining, boutique
shoppingexperiences, cultural eventsandquaint downtown streets.
Youwill readavarietyof topics in this issue, all based
around the season. You’llmeet several, youngWorld
Cupathletes inour Fashionpages, you’ll tour two
spectacular homes, you’ll be inspired toget into the
kitchenandyou’ll learn somehistoryabout

Thankyou forpickingusupand I hopeyoudevour
