We are thrilled to spotlight these recently launched businesses.
In 2005,
third generation farmers Tom and Karen Ferri bought a 22-acre apple
orchard located on Grey Road 2 near Victoria Corners. Tom renovated the farm
in 2007, creating a “super spindle”. This innovative growing system utilizes high
tree densities to achieve high and early yields, while requiring less manual work,
less chemical input, resulting in lower production costs and the ability to introduce
quickly, new valuable varieties into the market. The Ferri farm averages 2,500-
3,000 trees per acre, totaling over 60,000 trees.
In a cruel twist of fate the infamous August 2009 tornado touched down on the Ferri’s farm, causing widespread damage
to both crops, and buildings. In a heart beat, they lost 85% of production and it took approximately three years to replant
a new crop and reestablish a regular annual harvest. You wouldn’t know it by the look of their tight operation –I recently
toured the picturesque farm with Karen and was struck by how beautifully manicured the landscape appeared.
Certainly this durable family weathered the storm and came back stronger than ever, breathing life back into their sturdy
farm and producing world-class “fancy grade” apples for local and market consumption. Tom’s philosophy is “Pick no
apple before its time”; the result is a flawless crop of incredibly perfect, extraordinarily large, delicious tasting apples.
This fall, for the first time, the Ferri family have opened their farm to the public, with a charming and authentic Apple
Market and bakeshop. Apple varieties include mutsu, honey crisp, macintsoh, gala, ambrosia, courtland, golden deli-
cious, jonagold and macoun. The Market is also stocked with fresh Apple Blossom Honey from the Ferri’s hives, local
baked goods, and Milford Bay smoked trout pate. Karen was kind enough to send me on my way with a collection of
goodies, including a bag of the most delicious apples I have ever tried (I’m not exaggerating - I munched all the way
home) and some of the Milford Bay smoked trout pate, which my husband promptly confiscated and inhaled.

With just one step inside
Thornbury’s newest Bruce Street boutique,
Adorn II, I found myself immersed in the glamour of French antiques and
the delicate, soft scents of rare European lotions and colognes. Completely
unlike so many mainstream shops that sell boldly fragranced body creams
and highly perfumed soaps, the ambiance (and aroma) within the an-
tiqued tin walls of Adorn II is a delight for the senses. Certainly not limited
to bath and body, Adorn II has an impressive array of specialty imports,
all with a uniquely European sophistication.
Eight years ago Renee Desroches and her mother Elke opened a second location of their popular Port Perry store Pamper
and Soothe, in Thornbury. Originally located around the corner from Bruce Street on Louisa Street, Pamper and Soothe
was sometimes mistaken for a spa, so to eliminate any confusion Renee and Elke changed the name of the Port Perry
store to Adorn and naturally, the Thornbury store became Adorn II. A new prime location on Bruce Street South became
available earlier this spring, perfect for the new vision and the move was made. By early Summer the transformation was
complete. Adorn II officially opened its doors on June 1
st
at 32 Bruce Street South, a few doors down from Furbelows.
This charming little boutique has been a stunning addition to the main shopping district of quaint village-like downtown
Thornbury. With the exterior brick painted white, the building looks brand new yet it exudes an old-world kind of am-
biance. Clearly this is one-stop shopping for the woman who has everything on my Christmas list or when I deserve a
special treat ‘just because’. Hostess gifts abound with the gorgeous array of antique replica jars and decanters, jewelry,
fashion accessories, body products, chandeliers, and glamorous gifts… anything and everything to “Adorn” your body
and your home. Plan a visit soon and escape into the simple elegance of Adorn II.
