SECTIONING THE BRUCE
STORY & PHOTOS | CLAY DOLAN
13 VALLEYS
Spring is the season for muddy
boots and muddy paws.
Although the way
this year is shaping up it doesn’t seem like we’ll have either for
very long. The early snowmelt has given us the opportunity to
enjoy the spring landscape much sooner than normal and peo-
ple have been hiking since mid-March, which is almost unheard
of in these parts. Our featured Spring hike, picks up where we
left off in theWinter issue, and takes us through another section
of the Loree Forest called 13 Valleys.
To get there from the Blue Mountain Village, take Grey Road
19 East to the roundabout where you turn onto Scenic Caves
Road. Follow Scenic Caves as it climbs the Escarpment and
eventually turns into Grey Road 119. Go all the way to the first
stop sign, which is in the hamlet of Banks. From there turn right
on 4
th
Line and follow as the road dips down a short, steep hill.
There is parking on the shoulder where the road
takes a 90-degree turn to the left. (Coordinates
44.510776,-80.35762)
From the parking area it is a short walk up the
dual track, access road to the main tract of the
Bruce Trail marked with a white blaze. Take the
trail to your left and follow as it descends into the
forest. The trail skirts along a valley ridge before
it plunges down the steep embankment to a me-
andering creek and then climbs its way back out.
At the top of the next ridge the main trail meets
up with the Loree Side Trail marked with a blue
blaze. On Scott’s map we have marked the
route to follow the Loree side trail out to Grey
Road 21 and then following the road back to the
starting point. It’s a short hike, only 2.3 km.
