The Niagara Escarpment
plays a key role in creating good apple-growing
conditions in our region. The towering Escarpment
provides a protective boundary, confining the
moderate air temperatures influenced by the
bay to the fertile soils in this
productive area. The cool waters
of Nottawasaga Bay which
change slowly in temperature as
the seasons change, moderate the
air temperatures, thus reducing
the chances of late spring and
early fall frosts. This combina-
tion of the Escarpment and
Georgian Bay results in a micro-
climate that’s ideal for apple growing.
