A rabies vaccination clinic is not, however, a substitute for proper veterinary care and most pet
owners that visit their veterinarian on a regular basis usually do not need to attend them. It is al-
ways wise to check with your veterinarian before attending a rabies clinic to avoid having your
pet vaccinated twice for rabies or vaccinated when a three-year vaccine has already been pre-
viously administered. It is not wise to attend a rabies clinic if your pet has been unwell or has a
chronic illness. In these cases it is always better to make an appointment with your veterinarian
to see if your pet can be safely vaccinated. Once a pet has been vaccinated for rabies, another
alternative to giving future vaccinations is having your pet’s rabies titre checked which is a blood
test that detects antibodies against rabies in the immune system. If levels are adequate, a booster
is not needed, however if the antibodies fall below a certain limit, a vaccine is warranted. How
long a rabies titre lasts in an individual pet can vary greatly. It is very important to check with
your local municipality to see if titre testing is an acceptable alternative to vaccinating. This is
also very important when traveling abroad as an up to date rabies vaccination is often a re-
quirement along with other preventative health requirements. Certain countries, like the UK for
example, are deemed rabies free and therefore have very strict requirements for entering the
country with your pet.
